Mathematics and ecology. It’s not everyday we see these word side by side; but, according to Jennifer Thom, math is all about Oikos ( is the root word of ecology) ¬†which means “the family household.”

It makes sense! As a teacher, you want to nurture your students’ understanding of math, make sure they ‘tidy’ up their math, and encourage a community of connectedness. Math should be about examining relationships and connecting meaning to these relationships; just as environmental ecology does.

Jennifer’s book Re-rooting the Minding Space is a radical departure from the usual suspect math texts. She blends visual elements with poetic prose, and the result is an exemplary text that will hopefully change the way educators think and teach mathematics…
